RESARCH

Where the body's language gets studied, and shown to hold up.

Methodology, publications and partnerships, the theorised, published version of what IJAD tests on stage every season.

METHODOLOGIES

Three names for one practice

Not three separate ideas, three lenses on the same question: what does it take for a performance to stay coherent, legible and alive across physical and digital space at once

SYSTEM LOGIC

Polyphonic

Multiple agents — performer, audience, technology — operate without hierarchy. Meaning emerges through interaction, not a single authored message. Every element becomes a voice in a shared composition.

Live example: A System Under Stress, where performers, audiences and real-time systems negotiate visibility, endurance and responsibility together.

PERCEPTUAL LOGIC

Sensography

Founded by Joumana Mourad in 2017 with Prof. Andrew Newsam and Prof. Ian Loram, researching perception, attention, embodiment and relationality in live hybrid performance.

PROCESS LOGIC

Workflow

Iterative prototyping across physical and digital, interdisciplinary coordination, and temporal orchestration from rehearsal through to delivery — together, the Live Hybrid Dramaturgy Output.

Live Hybrid

Live Hybrid is a form of performance where storytelling, liveness and technology are interwoven from the outset, created equally for audiences in the room and online — whether through VR, augmented reality, or other immersive spaces sometimes described as the metaverse. Its defining feature is the artful use of creative tension between audiences, performers and technologies, which heightens engagement and creates a shared sense of presence across spaces.

The body carries the why of our work. The tech helps the why to be seen, and experienced.

OOT is the method and digital instrument IJAD created to realise its vision in an online world. Not a platform you stream on — a live hybrid performance system, combining choreography, dramaturgy and live digital production, where stories exist simultaneously across physical and digital worlds.

Polyphonic experiences — stories that unfold across bodies, cameras, networks and audiences at the same time. Not watched. Inhabited.

Not filming a show and putting it online. Not hybrid as an afterthought. Built for both worlds from the first creative decision.

How we work

IJAD doesn’t sit between dance, science and technology as three separate things. It’s a single practice — dance informed by science, enhanced through technology.

A single camera produces documentation. Twelve cameras produce an audience experience.

“It all came across brilliantly online.”
